In the work of Stefano Calligaro, sculpture is used as a way to understand, define and create space. With precise, subtle yet strong gestures Stefano Calligaro investigates the rules, conditions and possibilities of the medium, developing images that find their balance between flatness and spatiality, form(ality) and meaning, image and message. The works have a visual clearness but also make way for a more complex interpretation. Each installation is intended to both suggest and hide forms and narration, becoming sign and border between the surface of the sculpture and the surrounding environment.
The different components are never totally fixed, so that all the pieces are in a constant but slightly unstable balance. Sometimes it's only the viewer's position that can define what a work actually is, and even the smallest movement can change the shape and perception of the work.

Within the context of the presentation of art the space usually acts as a neutral environment. Ditte de Neef wants to reverse these conditions and place the spatial context in the foreground. She uses the richness the space offers by itself, such as form, remaining traces and other elements that define and characterise the surroundings. Ditte de Neef opens a dialogue with the space and reacts on what catches her eye; the space gives and she gives back. As such Ditte de Neef unveils what usually remains unnoticed and gives the spectator an opportunity to follow her observations.

The work of Selma van Panhuis consists of light, fragile spatial constructions and gestures that are assembled from everyday materials. The works seem to result from an ongoing process of reduction, minimalisation and purification and show a visual language of archetypal geometrical forms and basic colors. But the work is more than a formal research of the essence of (spatial) art. Through drawings, sketches and models it also addresses issues like authenticity, duplication and representation. On a physical level, an element of imperfection and nonchalance is deliberately being added, thereby creating friction, instability and tension. This human element saves the work from a strict formal research of a hermetic and abstract auto-universe and in fact directly makes visible the artistic process of creation, with its intuitive search, its trials and errors and newly found solutions.

For the occasion Ditte de Neef and Selma van Panhuis will collaborate in a new art work to see where their starting points and artistic methods meet.
