For the first exhibition of Walden Affairs we have made a personal survey of works in order to have a better understanding of human behaviour and its relation to the surrounding world. The selected works approach this in different ways - light-footed, layered, humoristic, observing and commenting – and thereby touch upon notions such as identity and self-image. One historical work roots Walden Affairs firmly in the past and serves as anchor point from where the programmatic strands of our initiative will develop.

'Freud.ppt' by Gregory Fong (1987) is a PowerPoint presentation of drawings culled from the works of Sigmund Freud, although an accompanying lecturer is missing. By removing the diagrams from their original context, their link to Freud and his psychoanalytic discourse is abstracted, evidenced only through key words, suggestive abbreviations, and limited animation. Freud's mapped interpretations become sites of free association where the act of reading is made literal.

In her recent work Marjolijn van der Meij (1970) has been focusing on the relationship between the individual and his/her surroundings. Using vintage photographs as her starting point she reveals the underlying currents of social structures and group behaviour. In the big scale chalk drawings the landscape turns into a mirror of the stagnant and overweight mental state of the humanity.

'Legowood' by Iede Reckman (1981) is a loose stack of elements, made of the wood of six old installations. Wood coming from the same installation got its own lego colour. The dimensions of the pieces are reduced to rounded centimetres. For the project 'Hercules 86' Iede Reckman was searching for a star as far in light years as his age. Hercules 86 is approximately 27,4 ly away. Iede observed it in the Leidsche sterrewacht when he was 27,4 years old. The light he saw at that moment was radiated when he was born.

In her spatial video installations, Femke Schaap (1972) composes image and space by projecting selected parts of film onto cut-out polystyrene forms. She investigates filmic aspects like synchronicity and coincidence to create a play between the captured reality and spatial experience. The tensions between the place of the individual in its social construction and the position of the actual body in the literal space as depicted in the images, are often reflected by the physical part which the visitor is invited to take in the work.
