In his publication 'Reassembling the Social' (2005), contemporary anthropologist Bruno Latour uses the term ‘plasma’ to describe that which is “not yet measured, not yet socialized, not yet engaged in metrological chains". This suggests that prior to quantification and socialization the meaning and value of phenomena can been seen as provisional, that prior to being anthropolized knowledge is speculative.
Karen Cunningham proposes the domain of visual culture as a valid mode for investigating the world, thereby utilizing an understanding of the ‘ethnographic turn’ in contemporary art and the ‘post-modern turn in anthropology’. In articulating the speculative approach evident not only within anthropology but also in science fiction and contemporary art, Cunningham’s works often highlight the position of the individual who as subject, practitioner and interlocutor is a vital, yet frequently neglected, component in cultural contact.

Karen Cunningham is based in Glasgow, UK. Recent projects include a group show at Forum Stadtpark, Graz, Austria and 'An Endless Theatre: the convergence of contemporary art and anthropology in observational cinema' at Edinburgh University. She is currently working on a video commissioned by LUX, which will initially be shown in a solo exhibition at Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, UK in October.
