Thoughts and houses intertwine in strange ways. It is not so clear where mental construction ends and physical surroundings begin. With his solo-project at Walden Affairs, Dutch artist Maarten Overdijk (1977) explores the nature of this composite.
The perceived height of furniture – a reference to the subjective experience and memory of the House in general – searches to establish a sensitized zone wherein the house, the presence of the works, and the perception of the visitor merge in an unstable amalgam. Overdijk’s aim is to evoke a hybrid state wherein the visitor activates the space of the installation, and the space of the installation, vice versa, evokes a psychological resonance. Taking the structure of the Walden house as point of departure, works are both integrated with and separated from the existing architecture. Using sculpture, painting and site specific intervention, elements of the interior are recorded and transported as objects into the exhibition.
